Politecnico di  Bari - DSP group (Physics Department)

The Physics Department of Polytechnic of Bari established in 1948 and at present a total of 275 people are working there. One of the most important areas of interest of the Physics Department is the digital signal processing applied to remote sensed signals.

The DSP group of Physics Department is directly involved in the hArtes project and is run by Prof. Maria Teresa Chiaradia.

It is composed of:

- 1 Full Professor

- 1 Associate Professor

- 13 research collaborators (Electronic / Computer Science Engineers, Physicists)

The two reference persons for this project are:

- Raffaele Nutricato (Electronic Engineer): This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it -

- Maria Teresa Chiaradia (Professor of Physics): This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Main activities of the DSP group

The main activities of the DSP group are related to research and education in the following digital signal processing fields:

  • Medical applications: in the past the group has been involved in the implementation of algorithms for the processing of medical images.
  • Satellite Image processing: this is the main activity of the group. Radar images acquired by satellites are used to monitor landslides and earthquakes by using interferometric images as shown by the following image (it shows the Aegion earthquake interferogram where fringes represent deformations occured): Images acquired by optical sensors mounted on satellites are used to monitor Ocean features, Sea-bottom features, Water temperature, Water quality Ocean productivity, Phytoplankton concentration and drift, and for Coastline detection.
  • Development and porting of algorithms into grid and/or parallel environments: In order to support the memory and computational demand of the algorithms used to process satellite images, the group has started 6 years ago a research effort dedicated to parallel and GRID computing, and to MATLAB to C porting.
  • Master: it is a master in digital signal processing specialized for satellite image processing organized by our group in collaboration with the Italian Space Agency (ASI)
  • Digital Signal Processors programming: this is a new activity started two years ago. Our goal is to use a cluster of the ATMEL DIOPSI940 dual core devices to execute the critical kernels of our algorithms!

In the last year the DSP group has started a spin-off company (GAP) with the aim of exploiting the results of the scientific activity carried out by the DSP group in the field of image processing and remote sensing.

Our role in the hArtes project

Our main effort in the hArtes project will be focused on Work Package 2 (Tools and methodologies development) and Work Package 5 (Exploitation and dissemination). As explained above, the generation of C code from MATLAB or SCILAB code is one of the strategic activities of our group. For that reason, we will provide our contribution to WP2 through the implementation of a SCILAB to C converter that will be developed in collaboration with INRIA. Thanks to our long experience in educational activities we will contribute to WP5 by organizing a hArtes Student Contest and the hArtes web seminars.
